What is the “morning-after” pill?
The morning-after pill is used as emergency contraception for women who have had unprotected sex. It is important for you to know that it is not the same as the abortion pill.
There are two different types of emergency contraception-Plan B and Ella.
What is Plan B?
Plan B is a large amount of the hormone Progesterone taken in a single dose. It works by delaying ovulation.
It is recommended to be taken within 72 hours of having sex.
It is not always effective in preventing pregnancy.
It has the potential to result in the death of the embryo as it disrupts healthy implantation and growth.
What is Ella?
Ellla works by blocking progesterone and delaying or even preventing ovulation.
It is recommended to be taken within 5 days of unprotected sex.
It is not always effective in preventing pregnancy.
It is related to the abortion pill, Mifeprex. This means that it can cause death to an embryo by blocking the hormone, Progesterone. Progesterone is needed to maintain a pregnancy.
What are the risks and side effects of Plan B and Ella?
Both medications can cause changes in your menstrual cycle, nausea, abdominal pain, tiredness and dizziness. They also may interact with other medications you are taking. Please check with your doctor before taking Plan B or Ella if you are on other medications.
